Through it all, I kept applying for jobs, introducing myself to potential employers with handwritten letters. One of the jobs I’d applied for was at the medical school at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). A new cardiology lab. This was a research assistant professor position—not especially glamorous, but it was right in the heart of Philadelphia, and the lab was specifically looking for a molecular biologist.

I always kept careful track of my applications. When I mailed them, I wrote down where I’d applied, what the position was, and who the contact was. Two weeks after applying, I’d call the potential employer to check in. I did this with the Penn job, too.

The secretary who answered my call told me that they were planning to readvertise the position. They hadn’t found the right applicant yet. “Can you take another look?” I told her my name. “Just take another look, please.”

Thirty minutes later, I got a call from a cardiologist named Elliot Barnathan. He was my age, thirty-four, just getting a new lab set up. He’d looked at my résumé. He’d seen what I could do. He was interested and wanted a personal meeting.
